Musariri, Blessing
"I didn't really make the decision to be a writer, the decision made me!"
Blessing holda an LLB (hons) from the University of Wolverhapmpton, a Masters degree in Diplomatic Studies from the University of Westminster and she is a qualified barrister. Of this she fondly says: "All this and yet law had
lost much of its lustre for me by the time I was in second year, but I never was one to leave something unfinished once I started (except short stories.)"
She worked as a Public Relations/Legal officer for Ashanti Goldfields Zimbabwe for two years and the most memorable part of these two years for her was the
trip she took to Ghana where she went 43 000 feet underground at their biggest gold mine in Obuasi. She then went on a hiatus to America for six months to find herself and lo and behold, the writer in her kicked in. Ever since then
she has held a variety of part-time jobs (most of them involving teaching English of some sort) while "growing into a pair of very big writer's shoes that destiny had bought for me in anticipation- I can't wait for the day they start to pinch my toes."
In the meantime she has walked several thousand miles in them anyway; to Zanzibar
for the inaugural Literary Forum during the annual Festival of the Dhow Countries
and to a beautiful writer's residency in Lavigny, Switzerland for three weeks
of uninterrupted peace and quiet and the most amazingly perfect scenery.
Her final comment: "Sometimes I get tired, but I'm still walking."
